LECTURE NOTES

Lecture 1: Briefing

04/04/19 (week 1)

Today our first class, we meet Mr Hafiz and Mr Redzwan. We did a simple briefing of what we are going to do. For the first week, we are introduce to vormator challenge, we were given a picture that we have to trace using illustrator with a pen tool and use that shapes to make a character. The rules are, we are not allowed to stretch or cut the shapes given. We are only allowed to rotate and scale.

The challenge allowed us to use how many shapes that we need, but we only allowed to use 3 colors at the end.

Exercise

We are instructed to do the vormator challenge. First, we instructed to trace each shape, the lecturer teach us how to use the tools in illustrator. The tool we mostly use is the pen tool. After that, he told us to make any character that we want with the limited shapes. I decided to make a dog with the shapes.

Lecture 2: Light and Shadow

11/04/19 (week 2)

This week we are learning how to make shadows by using cutting tool. The tool allowed us to cut certain part of a shape. We practice using a pear image that we traced.

Exercise

Today exercise is to make shadow of our vormator challenge. We were told to use the pen tool to make the shapes as shadows. We are allowed to use more than 3 colors this time.

Lecture 3: Lighting directiron

18/04/19 (week 3)

Today we have a lecture with Mr Redzwan class. We use 3 kind of markers in color 30%, 50%, 70% cool gray. We are practicing making light and shadows from different kind of light source. We are practicing with simple boxes at first, then we tried with cylinders. After we tried several times then we were told to draw items around us and put shadows. All our sketches are going to be submitted and graded.

Exercise

We are given a drawing to color with our markers. We are supposed to draw is twice because there 2 direction of lighting.

Lecture 4: Expression

25/04/19 (week 4)

Today we have a lecture with Mr Redzwan class. We use 3 kind of markers in color 30% cool gray to sketch expressions given. We then use marker to outlined them after. We are not allowed to use pencil or eraser to do this exercises.

Exercise

For exercise, we are told to make expressions from an animal of our choose and one object. I decided to make a bird, because I know they are expressive and funny, and I make a croissant for as an object. I make the croissant really judgmental as the expressions

Lecture 5: Lighting directiron

02/05/19 (week 5)

Today we went to a laser printing place at Fabspace, Lot10, Kuala Lumpur to see the printing progress. There's 2 types of printing material, one is using wood and one using acrylic.

Lecture 6: Custom Brush

09/05/19 (week 6)

Today we make a custom brush on photoshop. We use a drawing of splattered ink or watercolor and edit them a bit to fit as a brush. We have to make it as black and white to manage to make is to a brush. We also practice using pen tablets.

Lecture 7: Custom Brush

16/05/19 (week 7)

Today class was divided into 2 section, first is Mr Redzwan class. We are practicing using art pen to make lines.

For the second part of the class, we learn from Mr Hafiz. He tell us about a few of comic placement and difference between Japanese comic and Western comic.

Exercise

We are using the technique that we learn from Mr Redzwan class to do the next exercise. We need to copy from a few picture posted by Mr Redzwan.

We also given homework from Mr Hafiz. We are supposed to use Mr Redzwan technique for a picture of a pear. We need to use 6 different technique with the custom brush that we made.
